ADDITION OF INTEGERS
Addition
of integers
Integers
Integers are all positive
and negative natural numbers, including zero.
Z= {... -4 , -3, -2 , -1 , 0,
1, 2, 3, 4
...}
Key Concepts:
1. Positive Integers
·
Numbers greater
than zero
·
Written
as: +1,+2,+3, etc.
·
Can also be
written without the + sign: 1,2,3 etc.
2. Negative Integers
·
Numbers less
than zero
·
Written with a
minus sign: −1,−2,−3− etc.
·
Always include
the minus sign!
3. Zero
·
Neither positive
nor negative
·
The point where
positive and negative numbers meet
Rules
for Adding Integers:
1.
Adding Two
Positive Numbers
·
Just add them like regular numbers
·
Example: 5+3=85+3=8
2.
Adding Two
Negative Numbers
·
Add the numbers and keep the negative sign
·
Example: (−4)+(−2)=−6(−4)+(−2)=−6
3.
Adding a
Positive and a Negative Number
·
Find the difference between the numbers
·
Keep the sign of the bigger number
·
Example: (−5)+3=−2
