Dividing Decimals by Powers of 10
Learning Goal:
Understanding how to divide decimals by powers of 10 (10, 100, 1000)
Key Rule to Remember:
When dividing by a power of 10, move the decimal point to the LEFT the same
number of zeros in the power of 10.
- Dividing
by 10 (one zero) → move LEFT 1 place
- Dividing
by 100 (two zeros) → move LEFT 2 places
- Dividing
by 1000 (three zeros) → move LEFT 3 places
Examples:
1.
Dividing by 10:
45.6÷10=4.56
(Decimal moved one place left)
2.
Dividing by 100:
45.6÷100=0.456
(Decimal moved two places left)
3.
Dividing by 1000:
45.6÷1000=0.0456
