INTRODUCTION TO DECIMALS

 INTRODUCTION TO DECIMALS

Decimals are a way of representing numbers using a base-ten system, where the position of a digit determines its value. They are used to represent fractions, and the decimal point separates the whole number part from the fractional part.

Key Concepts:

·             Decimal Point:

The dot that separates the whole number part (left of the dot) from the fractional part (right of the dot).

·             Place Value:

Each position to the right of the decimal point has a place value that is 1/10th of the previous place value (tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc.).

·             Representing Fractions:

Decimals are used to represent fractions with denominators of 10, 100, 1000, and so on.

Examples:

·         23.45: 23 is the whole number part, and 45 represents 45/100 (4 tenths and 5 hundredths).

·         1.25: 1 is the whole number, and 25 represents 25/100 (2 tenths and 5 hundredths).

·         0.7: 0 is the whole number, and 7 represents 7/10 (7 tenths).

How to Read a Decimal Number

1. Pronounce the whole number part to the left of the decimal as you would any whole number.

2. Say the word “and” for the decimal point.

3. State the fractional part to the right of the decimal as you would any whole     number, followed by the place value of the digit in the rightmost column.
