 FACE VALUE  & PLACE VALUE CONCEPT


In a number every digit has two values. They are the face value and the place value.

FACE VALUE:
  
  The face value of a digit in a number is simply the value of the digit itself , regardless of its position within the number.

Example: Face value of 6 in 167 or 671 or 176 is always 6.

PLACE VALUE

Place value of a digit depends on the place it occupies in a number.

Place value of a digit = Face value of the digit X Value of the place.

Example: 1. Place value of 6 in 167 is 6 X10 =60.

                   2. Place value of 6 in 671 is 6 X100 =600.

                      3. Place value of 6 in 176 is 6 X1 =6.
