ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF LIKE FRACTIONS
LIKE FRACTIONS - ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION
What are Like Fractions?
Like fractions (also called similar fractions) are fractions that have the same denominator. example:
2/5 and 3/5 are like fractions
1/8 and 7/8 are like fractions
Rules for Adding and Subtracting Like Fractions:
Keep the denominator the same
Add or subtract only the numerators
Simplify the answer if possible
Examples:
1. Adding Like Fractions:
2/7+3/7=5/7
2. Subtracting Like Fractions:
8/9-5/9=3/9=1/3
Real-World Application:
Imagine you're making a pizza. If you eat 3/8 of the pizza and your friend eats 2/8, how much of the pizza was eaten in total?
Solution: 3/8+2/8=5/8 of the pizza was eaten.
MORE EXAMPLES
1. 3/8+2/8=5/8
2. 5/6-2/6=3/6=1/2
3. 4/10+3/10=7/10
4. 7/12-4/12=3/12=1/4
