CONVERSION OF FRACTIONS 


    Understanding Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers

An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to its denominator.

A mixed number is a whole number and a proper fraction combined.

        



    Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers

Divide the numerator by the denominator.

The quotient becomes the whole number.

The remainder becomes the new numerator.

Keep the same denominator.

    Example:

    11/4 → 11÷4=2 remainder 3

    So, 11/4=2 3/4

    Converting Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions

Multiply the whole number by the denominator

Add this result to the numerator

Keep the same denominator

    Example:

    2 3/4 → (2×4)+3=11

    So, 2 3/4=11/4
