COMPARISION OF FRACTIONS
Understanding Different Types of Fraction Comparisons
Comparing Fractions with Like Denominators
When fractions have the same denominator, compare the numerators
The fraction with the larger numerator is greater.
Example: 3/8 and 5/8
5/8>3/8 because 5 is greater than 3
Comparing Fractions with Like Numerators
When fractions have the same numerator, compare the denominators
The fraction with the smaller denominator is greater.
Example: 4/5 and 4/9
4/5>4/9 because 5 is less than 9
Cross Multiplication Method
Multiply the numerator of the first fraction by the denominator of the second fraction
Multiply the numerator of the second fraction by the denominator of the first fraction
Compare the products
Example: Compare 2/3 and 3/5
Cross multiply: 2×5=10 and 3×3=9
Since 10 > 9, 2/3>3/5
